Rock Chalk Jayhawk

I am so absurdly proud of being a Jayhawk that it’s a little gross. I wouldn’t say that I alone help to give Jayhawk fans a bad name (I know some of my  friends affiliated with less-sweet universities would beg to differ), but when your team and school is as badass as Kansas, it’s very hard to be modest. However, I will say that after this past basketball season, I will never EVER talk even 1/10th the amount of shit during a season as I did last year. Boy did that bite me in the ass. But, one of my favorite things in life is to run into a random Jayhawk while out and about. Here’s a little story about that:

My favorite crazy Romanian and I are driving down a busy street in Denver behind a brand new silver Range Rover Sport. There in the bottom right hand corner, about the size of a quarter, is a baby Jayhawk. Being the obnox KU fan I am, I demand that my Romanian pull along side him immediately. To my extreme pleasure, he’s very fit, very black, and very good looking. A bit taken aback, I almost forget my mission until I start yelling “ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK GO KU!!” into his window and ear drum.

He looks at us for a moment like we’re crazy, then can’t help but hide his huge smile. “YOU KNOW IT GURRRRRRRRRRRRRL!” and with a snap of his fingers the pretty gay boy in his pretty car with a pretty sticker took off. As the Romanian and I tried to compose ourselves while fighting the giggle fits we notice that our Black Stallion has returned and is furiously shaking something out of the window trying to get me to take it. I crawl halfway out of the window to make the perfect handoff.

Alas, no phone number but something even better: a sheet of little quarter sized Jayhawk stickers.

Rock Chalk Jayhawk, keep spreadin’ the love.

A for real MixTape

This has got to be the most badass MixTape idea ever. Leave to the clever kids at Holiday Matinee, easily one of my favorite blogs, to come up with this. Each month they drop a new MixTape with a different design and new playlist. The music usually bangs and if it doesn’t you can find yourself just staring at the tape as it goes round and round because it’s that cool. Only thing I don’t know is if you have to flip it half way through… Continue reading

I Heart Street Art

In front of the MCA in Denver, probably one of my favorite spots in Denver.

A post on the Cool Hunter about Street Art says it best; street art can completely change the look of a city if the city council will only be open minded enough. Thankfully I live in places that see the value of turning a piece of brick into something more. I love finding little hidden pieces of art sprinkled around town, it’s like finding a four-leaf clover in the middle of a concrete jungle. Maybe even as cool as finding a dolla bill on the ground. Denver has an absurd amount of sculptures, hidden art and inspiration throughout the city. Here’s a small collection of things that have caught my eye in the past few months. Continue reading

Anthem Branding Happy Hour

If I haven’t already told you about this, then we probably haven’t caught up recently. This is my little networking side project I’ve been working on for a while at work and it’s almost here! 2140 is the Boulder Chamber’s Young Professionals Networking group; they do a great job at putting on Happy Hours, Luncheons, and Philanthropic events in the community to get people between the ages of 21 & 40 together to socialize. It’s not a pretentious group of card shovers, just people like you and me that like to meet & greet with a drink and chat it up.

On Wednesday Sept 22 from 5:30-7:3opm Anthem Branding is partnering with 2140 to host the September Happy Hour. With the recent wildfires in our neck of the woods, the non-profit we’ve decided to benefit could not be a better choice. EFAA (Emergency Family Assistance Association) has helped thousands of families in need, providing food, shelter, rent assistance, furniture and more. They are currently playing a critical role in supporting the families that have been devastated by the recent Fourmile Wildfire and the ongoing Larimer County Wildfire.

Upslope Brewing Co has generously donated their delicious beer for the occasion, Comida, the mobile Mexican feast will be rolling up in the parking lot to dish out some tacos, and wine will be flowing. We’re suggesting a $15 donation to EFAA if you come…there are a lot of families that have lost everything and need a little boost. We’ll get the party tab, you just show up, support a great cause, and have a good time.

2 more reasons you should come: Anthem is known for rad swag and if you get there early you just might get some fly gear of your own. And I’m moving 3 days later, so come say good bye please (:

Rado to the Chi

I’m 2 weeks out from moving across the country, leaving one home for another. I never saw it coming this soon, but when does life ever play fair? My emotions over the whole situation have been out of control, and for that my friends I apologize. We all know I can be a hot mess at times, but I truly appreciate you all for appeasing my extreme hot mess-ness as of late.

A summary timeline of my thought process over the last month and half:

Gut reaction? Hell yes. 1 week in: Hmm. Series of unfortunate events: This is going to be way harder than I thought. Unexpected response: Ok! I got this. Another series of unfortunate events: Aaaand it’s time for me to go.

Today while on a blog blitz multitasking the packing of my relocube: Let’s do this.

I can’t say I haven’t been extremely butthurt about leaving Rado the past few weeks. You would be too if you had to leave an amazing bubble of sun and snow, where people run around playing all day. I’ve got a sweet gig at a killer company, amazing circle of friends who have nearly become my family and the biggest adult playground I’ve ever come across in my exploring. A lot of people would say, “Nah, I’m good right here.”

On the flipside, I’ve always told myself I’d go home if the right opportunity presented itself. A dream job working for my mentor to launch my career, the official Chi-town crew and actual family, all in one of the (in my humble opinion) sickest cities the US has to offer? Pretty much the opportunity of a lifetime right I’d say. I’d be violating my own personal morals if I didn’t go. Not to mention the line-up of events this year in Chicago are epic, in which case my presence was required anyway.

Time to grow up and go get my dreams. As scary as that is, I’m ready and waiting to go rock it.

I’ll be back Rado, I’m not done with you yet. But in the meantime, I will be enjoying my new view.

The Roots Crew

The Roots, hailing from Philly. My favorite group eva and for good reasons that I’ll get to in good time. From the moment I heard “You Got Me” as a sophomore in high school I knew I was hooked on the Roots and hip hop in general for life. I know that sounds redic and like the opening scene straight out of Brown Sugar (which both Questlove and Black Thought are in) but it’s true. For now, just know that I’ve got so much material on The Roots that they now have their own category and if you haven’t already bought/rocked/loved their latest album “How I Got Over” you’re slacking hard.

Um…

What a great way to kick off the Stuff I think is Cool category. The Awkward Moment cards are brilliant. Not only do I have a secret obsession for notecards in the first place, but had I known about them sooner I would have blown through a few boxes already. Perfect to start off those conversations you never thought you’d have to have. Please advise if you need my updated address. Continue reading

Don’t Block My Shine

So this blog has been a long time coming. Some of you know exactly how long and if you don’t, let’s just say it’s been a minute. I started a different blog a while back, but due to the nature of some of the posts I still refuse to reveal it to those who know me best. Better left anonymous, however if you’re clever enough to piece together the clues I plan on sprinkling throughout this page, perhaps one day you’ll find it.

Due to a huge transitional time in my life, I’ve decided to pick up the dreams I’ve left along the way and bring them with me. 1. Start a blog that you’ll actually tell people about. Special thanks goes out to a blonde beauty, her comb and love life for getting me off my ass on this one. Bare with me, as I’m a total rookie but obvi envision this page one day running wild with success. You can say you’ve been there since the beginning. I love to write, take photographs, I always have something to say, and the most ridiculous shit inevitably happens to me. Hence, a blog. 2. Take some classes to brush up my photo skills. Since college I’ve been trying to make this happen. Thanks to some recent haters, it soon will. Look forward to still shots that capture a memory better than your mind ever could. More to come on that. 3. Blog regularly and learn as I go. Like I said, novice over here. I hardly know what a widget is much less a trackback, but don’t worry. I’m a scary quick learner and this page will be lookin’ fly in no time. I’ve also decided that Facebook status updates are for the birds (ha! yea right, I love that ish) but instead of spending so much time on the book, better to invest my charm on a blog.

Just a few ground rules. Nicknames will be used to protect the innocent and blast the guilty. Only kidding, you’ve got nothing to worry about. I’ll blog about anything I want, including but not limited to: music, people I know and people I don’t, sports, traveling, cool stuff, pictures I take and stories that happen to me. No one will edit my blog except me; expect real, authentic SJ 100% of the time. And I will always give credit where credit is due. (Title by Michael Tizer.)

So sit back and enjoy. Feel free to leave comments, cuz you know I’ll eat that up as well. Thanks!
